Oxygen Not Included is a challenging colony survival game with gameplay elements similar to Rimworld. Just like other games in this genre, you are expected to lose the game multiple times in order to learn from your mistakes. Developed by Klei Entertainment, the people behind Don’t Starve, this game is bound to entertain you through multiple playthroughs.

You start the game with just three colonists. The colonists in Oxygen Not Included are called duplicants, or dupes for short. At the start of the game, you’re provided with just a few cycles’ worth of food supplies. Combine this with a temporary source of Oxygen through Oxylite deposits, it won’t take you long to figure out your first problem. Oxylite is present in the natural environment of the game but only in the starting area. Regardless of where you find it, it’ll eventually run out. Most players will quickly burn through their starting resources long before they develop a renewable source for oxygen and food production. So there’s no need to panic as there’s definitely methods of producing oxygen other than just looking for Oxylite.

Failure in a game like Oxygen Not Included is just part of the gameplay. Even after you’ve managed to solve your food, oxygen and water problems. It won’t take long for you to notice that heat is a massive issue when it comes to isolated asteroids in space. Entropy is The Last Question after all. Thermodynamics eventually kicks in and forces you to start working on air conditioning solutions for your colony. Just like in real life though, an AC doesn’t actually get rid of heat. It simply moves it to another location.

The developers eventually added an Anti Entropy Thermo-Nullifier which allows you to remove heat from your colony in a much more literal sense. But you’ll need to be pretty far into your current run in order to even consider it as an option. The game is a lot easier to play if you have a small number of duplicants.. So if you’ve already failed a bunch of times, try not having more than five or so duplicants at least until after you’ve managed to build a sustainable farm.
